Our story: what bōdian means, and why we started with hands

bōdian sounds like body, and that’s no accident.

What bōdian means

bōdian (bō-dee-ən) comes from Old English, from a root that means to be awake. Say it out loud and you hear “body” in it. That’s the whole idea: an invitation to be a little more awake to your body, and to care for it in a way that feels elemental and ritual, not rushed.

Every bōdian product will carry a traditional Chinese method, in the way you use it or in what’s inside.

My grandma’s spa

My grandma used to own a spa in China. Growing up, I remember the hand treatments they did there, with salt and oil to exfoliate. I never forgot how soft my hands felt after.

Last year I went back to China and visited a high-end spa I love. They gave me a four-step hand ritual: salt, oil, serum and cream. It took me straight back. I was in love. I wanted that treatment every single day if I could.

So I started researching, and there was no product anywhere that could recreate the whole ritual. I worked closely with a lab in China, round after round, until we had our own version: bōdian’s first product, the Transformative Hand Care Ritual.

The first ritual

A sea salt polish with jasmine petals and a nourishing hand oil exfoliate together. An emulsifying serum turns everything into a milky wash as you rinse. A hand cream seals it all in. Jasmine runs through every step, so when you finish, it feels like you’ve just come back from a spa in a jasmine garden. Here’s how each step works.

Bodycare rituals within reach, for every part of you

That line is the whole brand.

The ritual: a few minutes of your day that are just for you.

Within reach: everything we make is designed to stay close. One small carton holds the complete ritual, four sachets, one per step, so it lives in your bag, on your desk, by your sink.

For every part of you: we’re starting with hands, the part of us that works the hardest and gets the least care. Next come the other places you usually forget: lips, neck, feet and more.

This is just the beginning. Welcome to bōdian.
