The perfect holiday gift, for people with taste

Some gifts get opened and forgotten. This one gets used, talked about, and kept on the shelf for the box.

A spa ritual in a box

The Transformative Hand Care Ritual is four steps from a traditional Chinese spa: a sea salt polish with jasmine petals, a nourishing hand oil, an emulsifying serum that turns milky as you rinse, and a hand cream with shea butter, squalane and niacinamide. Under five minutes, and their hands have never felt softer. It’s a hand spa at home, and the self-care gift most people would never buy for themselves. Here’s how the ritual works.

A flower that exists only in imagination

Slide the box open and the first thing you see is a flower that never grew.

Baoxianghua (宝相花), the treasure flower, emerged from ancient Chinese art and flourished during the Tang dynasty. Its petals borrow from the lotus, the peony and the chrysanthemum, bringing together different forms of beauty into something nature itself never created. Woven into silk, carved into stone and painted across porcelain, it has carried wishes of purity, prosperity and beauty through centuries.

It is the first of the four patterns on our cartons: blue treasure flowers on coffee bean brown, the way a glaze sits on a lacquered box.

Ink on paper

The second carton is cerulean ink, laid in long horizontal strokes the way a brush travels across rice paper: deeper where the ink pools, paler where the paper shows through. The third takes the same ink to its softest edge, pale spots blooming on a plaster ground, each ringed in blue where the water carried the pigment out. The fourth is a weave, blurred blocks of blue on dark brown, an echo of ikat cloth, where the thread is dyed before it is woven so that every edge feathers.

Four cartons, no two alike, and one palette throughout: cerulean blue, coffee bean brown, and the ivory of the paper.

Why these patterns

At bōdian we find inspiration in these quiet expressions of heritage: a reminder that beauty is not only something to admire, but something to live with, touch, and return to through ritual. The ritual itself comes from a traditional Chinese spa. It felt right that the box should come from the same place.

Made to be given

Every bōdian product is designed with gifting in mind. Each ritual comes in its own patterned carton, and the sets arrive ready to wrap, the bōdian wordmark running along the end of the ivory box.

It’s also made to be shared. One carton is one complete ritual, so you can keep a few and slip the rest into stockings, or do the ritual together on a night in with friends. Everyone gets a different pattern.

The free pouch

Orders over $100 come with our limited-edition makeup pouch, free while supplies last: ivory, covered in blue and gold flowers, with the bōdian label. It holds a few rituals for travel, your makeup, your everyday things. Wrap it with the set, or keep it for yourself.
